The Spray Foam Contractor Insurance Checklist: 6 Coverages You Need

Spray foam is a specialized trade with a specialized risk profile. A generic contractor policy leaves real gaps. Here's the complete checklist of coverages an SPF insulation business should carry, and what each one does.

1. Commercial General Liability (CGL)

The foundation. Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage from your operations—slips at the job site, overspray damage, and general premises exposure. Required by virtually every general contractor before you can work on their site. Remember: CGL alone excludes pollution claims.

2. Contractor's Pollution Liability

The non-negotiable for SPF. Because foam is a classified pollutant, this coverage fills the pollution gap in your CGL—covering chemical exposure, off-gassing, odour, and improper-cure claims. Skipping it is the most common and most costly mistake spray foam contractors make.

3. Contractor Equipment & Tools

Your proportioner, transfer pumps, hoses, generators, and trailer represent a major investment that standard auto coverage won't protect. Equipment coverage (inland marine) protects the gear against theft, fire, and damage wherever it is, and equipment breakdown covers mechanical failure of your high-pressure machines.

4. Commercial Auto & Fleet

Covers liability for operating your trucks, vans, and rig-hauling trailers, plus physical damage to the vehicles. Add hired and non-owned auto for crews using personal vehicles. (The equipment inside the trailer is covered under equipment coverage, not auto.)

5. Workers' Coverage & Employers' Liability

Beyond mandatory provincial WCB/WSIB coverage, employers' liability protects your business when an injured-worker claim extends beyond the board's scope. SPF work carries real occupational exposure—isocyanates, respiratory risk, work at height—so correct classification and coverage matter.

6. Completed Operations

Foam problems often surface months or years after the job—shrinkage, off-gassing, adhesion failure. Completed-operations coverage responds to those delayed claims and should align with the length of any workmanship warranty you offer.

Add-Ons to Consider

Depending on your operation: excess/umbrella liability to meet high GC limit requirements, installation floater / course-of-construction coverage, and cyber coverage if you handle customer data. We tailor these to how you actually work.
